Getting Started

These days it is much easier to get started in Ham Radio. The best way to get started is to contact your local Ham club. Searching “Local Ham Radio Club” should find clubs local to you. Here are some local clubs for Southerner Maryland and surrounding areas click Local Clubs.

Whether you are interesting in radio/antenna science, communications, prepping, contesting, or community service there is something for you. Hams communication with local groups or world-wide using radio-to-radio, repeaters, satellites or digital modes that are assisted by the internet.

Elmers:

An Elmer is Ham radio jargon for a mentor. St. Mary’s County Amature Radio Association has a numbers of Elmers willing to help you with your radio journey. To reach out to an Elmer from SMCARA, just send an email what what you need help with in the subject line to elmer@smcara.org and someone from the club will get back to you.
